I make no apologies for the use of swearwords in the Sam Harris Series. There are several reasons for the inclusion of profanity, as our North American cousins call it, and I put a few of them in this post.
1. British people swear a lot more than Americans and find it a lot less shocking as a result. The characters in this book are British and this is real life adventure so if there were no swearing at all, it would ring false as a result
2. Sam is working in Mining, an industry where the f-word is liberally sprinkled through most sentences as a verb, adverb, noun adjective, well, anywhere it will fit. Obviously putting the f-word in every sentence would be boring and unnecessary so I try to keep it to a minimum but again, if there wasn’t any bad language at all, the narrative would seem false and I am trying to create a real world for my characters
3. Please remember that this is a novel, and not intended as a life map or coaching manual. Try and enjoy the characters for who they are and not to take personally their bad habits. Sam’s boyfriend Simon happily sleeps his way around her friends, but I dont expect too many complaints about that, as it is his awfulness that makes him interesting. Please take swearing in this light. Some people swear. Some people dont.
